If you're a dude you gotta admit you're pretty lucky with the shoe selection. Us ladies always gotta either rock dude kicks (which were ok with at times) or have to conform to wearin dunks or j's with some shades of pink n call it a day.
Well Milkshake Kicks refuses to accept that.
We caught up with Courtney and Curve from Milkshake Kicks at the SMOTA (Shoe Market of The America's) show here in Miami and they explained to us what this movement is all about.
RNDM: Where did Milkshake come from?
MILKSHAKE: The concept came from realizing that the big dog companies were bastardizing sneakers; giving girls boy sneakers and saying, "Here girl, wear this." Fitting a circle into a square so to speak and that's not really working.
RNDM: This is true. Talk to me about the Milkshake name and logo themselves and why you chose them.
MILKSHAKE:
Courtney: It was important to us to find a name that was gonna attract attention. One that had a double or triple meaning. After all, sneakers are art, so they can be interpreted in many ways. Also, it made our tag line ("How do you shake?") a little easier and gave us a chance to incorporate a message into what we do. How do you shake... what inspires you?
Curve: You're never going to walk into a milkshake shop and find the same thing. The flava you get each time we design something, each time it's gonna be something different.
Courtney: You can have so many interpretations of it. Like I said, it's art. We went through so many names... After we decided the name, we felt the logo needed to represent femininity and it needed to be a symbol you're gonna see and remember. We're at the heart of the movement. We feel its approachable and it has a good feel.
RNDM: Where did your inspiration for the spring '08 line (The Bloom Exhibition) come from?

MILKSHAKE: Bloom has got a double meaning. As an entity and a company we are blooming; just getting started. And then we pulled inspiration from Mother Nature because that's where everything comes from. There's a lot that went into the design. It's art.
RNDM: What silhouettes did you use for the Bloom collection?
MILKSHAKE: It consists of 3 mids and 5 lows. We will be workin a little more with the mid silhouette in future collections.
RNDM: You recently shot a commercial with Byata from Miss Rap Supreme. How was that like?
MILKSHAKE: She's eclectic. We felt that she would show diversity in the commercial because that is exactly what Milkshake is all about. Art is subjective. Beauty, originality is all subjective. She shakes by using her art to express everything. She sees the world as art. To her, its freedom. The commercial has a lot of messages of self empowerment and inspiration. It's not just a sneaker company. It's a lifestyle. Really showin that there is a lifestyle. And a message and a meaning behind all of it. Through this creation of Milkshake we can definitely open doors for self empowered women in this industry that won't really allow it otherwise. We're creating opportunities for women to show off their talent. Our entire campaign is about self empowerment.
RNDM: So how do you shake?
MILKSHAKE:
Courtney: Ha. Wow. Well, I shake strong and really believe in everything I do. If I believe in it im goin strong. I shake with conviction and make a lot of noise. If I believe it, I'm in it.
Curve: I shake through belief. I truly believe in everything that I do.
RNDM: Tell us about the Fetti Bettys.

MILKSHAKE:
Courtney - Ah... Fetti di Biassi. Precision. Not one person can look at those shoes without commenting. They rock. She did an amazing job. She even got Betty sippin on the milkshake logo. I feel as though she has opened up an avenue for milkshake. We are now the official exclusive license holder for the Betty Boop sneaker and Betty Boop flip flop.
Curve - She [Fetti] can attach a street wear feel to something so mainstream.
Her energy is nothin but smiles from hello to goodbye. She's been nothin but a pleasure to work with and she's puttin female customizers on the map that normally wouldn't get that opportunity.
RNDM: Congratulations on that for both Milkshake and Fetti. I'm diggin this little container over here. What's this?

MILKSHAKE: Our sneaker wipes. Spike Lee...."You stepped on my sneakers!!" We were spendin too much time cleanin our sneakers. This is a microwave generation. Wipe and walk. That's what it is.
RANDUMB NOTE: IT WORKS!
RNDM: Nina sky has a song called "Kickz" where they shout out Milkshake. I'm hearing you guys will be doing a shoe together as well. How has this collaboration experience been?
MILKSHAKE: Me and Curve met in the music industry. We started a music production company and we have access to these people. They have a cool manager and they're just a natural fit to our brand. If your gonna collab with anyone to do a sneaker, it has to make sense. And they make sense. They are evolving into womanhood. It's a nice evolution for their career and its an evolution for this industry. Its a good experience to work with them because they are very hands on, very involved. We love that.
RNDM: When do we get to see them [the shoes]?
MILKSHAKE: We will be unveiling them in Vegas during the Magic Trade show. It will happen the day before Magic starts ( August 24th ) at Finishline in the area. The actual release date of the shoe is tentative on their album release since we wana pair it up with that.
RNDM: What would you say was your biggest obstacle as far as establishing yourselves in this industry?
MILKSHAKE: Gettin people to support what we're tryin to do. We're not tryin to be Pastry or Nike. Females keep sayin "Nobody cares about us". And here we are. A brand that cares and caters to them. We wanna create opportunities and do research and get all the females to be a part of this movement.
Retail chains have been sellin to girls for so many years a men's sneaker. And we're tellin em here's a womens sneaker that we're tryin to sell to women. Retail these days won't look at you without a celebrity endorsement.
RNDM: Is that why you chose to work with Nina Sky?
MILKSHAKE: Nina Sky is true to the movement which is why we work with them. They're supporters of the culture, not just any type of females. They're a part of this just as much as we are.
RNDM: At this point what has been your greatest accomplishment?
MILKSHAKE: To believe that we could create a sneaker company for females and now having the opportunity to actually bring it to the market.
RNDM: So, what's next for milkshake?
MILKSHAKE: We will be introducing a new silhouette pretty soon and just continue to bring new and innovative ideas into the market. Our kids line will hopefully be dropping spring 09. We will continue to find ways to innovate and get females to participate in our movement. We are movin into the multi market right now. And soon... the world! MI GENTE! My people...
Peep the pics. More comin soon.
