December 2008

It's Already 2009 in China

The big clock keepers of the world have decided that we're all out of sync. So what are you going to do with your extra second of 2008?

We, at RandumbMiami, will be taking that extra second to relish in the fading glory of this past year. We want to thank everyone who's been a supporter, both recently and since the very, very beginning.

Special shout outs to CMS & LexOne, Lori, Courtney & Curvel, (Cub)Annie, Buddy Fresh, Dangerous & Beautiful, DJ Trippin, Paid & Popular, Needle Mag, the305.com, Kathy, JenJen, Sammi F, all those who've sent us emails, all the lovely people we met at Magic & even all the ones who hated [on] us. Everyone says next year will be their year but all we'll say...

is you'll have to wait & see.

FUCK NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS. They set you up for failure. There's something you dont like... just make a conscious decision to start building up to make it different.

"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee." --Marian Wright Edelman

We love you guys! Make it safe through 2008 and we'll see you next year!

stay live * love

CATALYST for CUBA

On November 2, 2008 around 2am Bboy Cuba [Raw Meat Crew] was hit by a car on the Dolphin Expressway. Apparently, he and some other bboys had stopped to help some people who had been involved in an earlier accident. A passing (speeding) car struck another car which struck the rail Cuba was by, tossing him 30 feet.

Although he was in critical condition with injuries to his head, hands, arms and torso, he's now recovering at Jackson Memorial.

We all know these are tough times and hospital bills ain't no joke. Enter FUNDRAISERS for BBOY CUBA. 3 events have taken place, the latest at the last Catalyst get down of the year that happened yesterday. We'll get to the pictures in a second but FIRST! Open your hearts and wallets and let's all pull together and get this amazing guy rehabilitated. Questions about donations or other help can be emailed to fantumxxx1@yahoo.com. Paypal donations can be made to this email address: joel@miamiyfc.com.

Unfortunately we couldn't stay for the actual battle but the warmups turned into a battle within itself. Right vs Left with some pretty heavy contenders on both sides. BBOYS IDENTIFY YOURSELVES. We couldn't get all of your names. Shouts to the ONLY FEMALE REPRESENTER of the evening. It was the best time we've ever had at Catalyst. Shouts to the ill concession (best hot dogs ever created)+ Nintendo Mario Kart up in the Lounge. MISS RED we see you! Interview coming soon....

One to tease, more to please after the jump.

Lets be Drum Buddies

Last night after a pretty long day of activities, we gathered at a friends house and after an unexpected outburst and a request to look up something up on youtube we came across...

The Drum Buddy.

This post requires a special shout out to

Katie the one who likes to snuggle
Jenny the one who doesnt like to snuggle
Regina who destroys cars
The Harringtons who are amazing
The Harrington household which is pretty welcoming at all hours of the night
Aaron who is great, & his girlfriend who is pretty demanding
Chinese food because its what jewish people eat on christmas
and forever knowing that nothing is open on christmas, especially at 11 PM.

+/- What is the Drum Buddy you say?

Because wikipedia answers the questions to life

The Drum Buddy, invented by New Orleans Ninth Ward one-man band Quintron, is a light-activated oscillating drum machine which operates on the principles of an optical theremin. An electronic instrument developed in the Spellcaster Lodge QElectronics laboratory, only 44 units hand-assembled by Quintron exist. Its four voices – Space, Snare, Bass and Kick, are triggered by activating a photoelectric cell either intermittently or with an on/off DIP switch in combination with exposure to light.

The Drum Buddy is outfitted with a light fixture on a periscopic pipe fixed to its base. The fixture's bulb can be controlled by means of a dimmer switch. The bulb hangs above a rotating platen upon which a number 10 can (the large size common to coffee, canned vegetables and some sauces) prepared with holes and non-reflective paint is placed. As the can rotates, its holes pass the Drum Buddy's photoelectric cells, firing drum-like tones and theremin or Moog synthesizer-like chirps or buzzes.

Accomplished purveyors of the Drum Buddy can operate the instrument freestyle by "scratching" the can back and forth against the resistance of the platen's motor or by performing short solos on the bass channel's 12-point chromatic scale.

Thank you wikipedia.

Now please play the video and be intrigued.

RANDUMBmiami will have one in its posession by any means necessary.

Lori of Female Sneaker Fiends

For those of you who may know and for those of you who don't, we are very closely affiliated with the Female Sneaker Fiend organization. (FSF)

Make sure to check out the page www.femalesneakerfiend.com

We are part of the South Florida Chapter founded early this year that is just an extension of how massive this movement has become. Not even the founder of the group, Lori, can believe its worldwide success. Yes Ladies and Gentlemen..WORLDWIDE.

So if you didn't know get wit it.

We got a chance to interview Lori Lobenstine the creator of FSF to get a better perspective on the boss's point of view in the on going rise of dominance with females in the sneaker culture.

RNDM: For those who don't know, what is www.femalesneakerfiend.com?

LORI: Femalesneakerfiend.com is a worldwide community of girls and women who love their kicks. It’s a movement, a website, an attitude, an industry watchdog…you name it. We’re here claiming a space that is undeniably ours. If you visit the site, you KNOW females are serious about sneakers. It’s also a great site to visit for interviews, product updates, contests, photos, internships, sneaker art and the largest online sneaker marketplace for fiends with small feet. Check it out…

+/- More with Lori

RNDM: When did your love of sneakers first rise to the surface?

LORI: My mom says it was as soon as I learned to run. I was convinced that I was terribly fast (I’m not), and that sneakers made me even faster. By the time I was six I also had a keen sense of style in my kicks, as witnessed by my twin sister who still tells the story of coming home with a pair of sneakers she picked out and I just shook my head. She instantly knew I was right, too.

RNDM: How and when did you decide that you would turn your passion for sneakers & this entire culture into a business?

LORI: It was about three and a half years ago. Bobbito Garcia had just turned me on to the whole online sneaker community, and I was really excited about it. Then I realized how male dominated it was, and it made me realize we needed our own site. Now there are many females on the mainstream sites, which I think is great. But it’s still good to have a home base, and a site that’s dedicated to OUR game: supporting female fiends, women in the industry, female customizers, store owners, etc.

Lori with some of her collection

RNDM: How does it make you feel to see FSF being represented all over the US, even in other parts of the world? Did you ever expect the word to spread so far?

LORI: I always knew there were female sneaker fiends worldwide, but I had no idea if the site would take hold or not. In the beginning, I was literally the only one on our forums. Now there are about 25,000 members! So I’ve been really amazed and humbled by all the worldwide love the site has gotten.

RNDM: The FSF motto is "Don't sleep on the ladies!" Although dudes do tend to dominate, lately females have become more & more prominent in all aspects of the industry, specifically, as designers & business owners. What issues did you have to confront when you first started out and how do you think the industry and perspective has changed since then?

LORI: I think the sneaker industry is really starting to come around, at least in terms of recognizing the passion and buying power of female sneaker fiends. We are seeing more women in sneaker companies, owning stores, designing kicks, etc. I think it’s all been positive. For the first time, you can go into a chain sneaker store and actually find heat on the women’s wall! Now I’m not saying that the only solution is better women’s kicks. I think that most female sneakerheads buy men’s kicks, cuz that’s where the most investment and heat is. But either way, I want the industry to acknowledge women as informed, obsessive, passionate sneaker fiends, not just accessories that a guy can get to go with his kicks!!

RNDM: Any advice for the present & future female sneaker fiends, businesswomen, customizers & engineers?

Two things:

1) Don’t give up. Change takes time. We can do this.

2) We need to work together. Too often when women succeed we get put out there as individuals. If we’re truly to succeed in making the industry more female-friendly, we have to respect, promote and support each other. (Much love to our many male allies, too!)

Randumbs:

RNDM: What's your favorite pair?

LORI: Hmmmmmm….today I’m going to say my Puma Californias. All of them. They are handsome and beyond comfortable. I just with I’d bought more before they stopped making them. But I know they’re coming back…

RNDM: What's currently playing on your iPod?

LORI: A fabulous 80s mix! Best decade of music ever. Outrageous. Come on…Wham, Howard Jones, Madonna, Timex Social Club, Men at Work, Lisa Lisa…we were all over the map.

RNDM: What's your favorite show?

LORI: Probably Frasier, but mostly I watch sports. I only wish they showed more women’s hoops on TV.

RNDM: What's more important: a hot pair, a hot outfit... or is it really all that important after all?

LORI: Well, those who know me know I’m not putting much weight on a hot outfit. I wear what I feel like as long as it matches my kicks. So kicks come in way ahead of the outfit. That said, to me it’s only important that you wear whatever makes you feel powerful. Anything that helps inspire you to go out there and do your thing.

We want to thank Lori for taking the time to get with us.

Of course if you havent already checked out the site www.femalesneakerfiend.com, get on the blog, get on the forums...

and you already know..

Ladies stay up, Fellas keep up.
