THE CO11ECTIVE: ART BASEL 2011

We are extremely excited for this upcoming Art Basel here in Miami. Miami is known for being a tourist destination in the summer for it's hot bitches..I mean beaches. Its weather, the shopping and the relaxation. Although I think its ALWAYS a great time to come to Miami, #1 season to head over here would be during Art Basel week.

December 1st through the 4th must be spent in Miami if you are remotely enthused by art of any kind.

Art Basel only makes its way to one destination besides its home town of Switzerland. That one destination is Miami. In my opinion, that is a pretty distinct honor and this is their 10th year of making Miami their 2nd home.

We will be providing coverage of our outings during this years Art Basel and will be informing you of events we feel you need to know about!

You guys HAVE to make your way out to The CO11ECTIVE, a satellite event making its way to Miami this year.

"The Co11ective features artists who form part of a conglomeration of bi-cultural visionaries known to employ distinctive skills and vision whether in the murals,
structures or canvas they coat with their muse or in the mysteriously profound photographic statements they capture. The Co11ective will showcase murals and installations by famed artists Trek Six, Lizzie Easton, Lauren Webb Harris, Celso
Gonzalez, Rimx, Larregui, SK545, Osunlade, La Pandilla, Bik Ismo, Shaun Thurston with special exhibits by Infamous Magazine, Red Bull Through My Eyes, HVW8 and Carlos “Mare139” Rodriguez."

Artist and Photographer Lizzie Easton will be among this incredible array of talent.

Lizzie Easton’s varied and successful professional life has always been dependent
on one essential, unmistakable quality: the ability to engineer profound, positive
changes in the lives of those she works with without calling attention to herself.
In her career as a midwife, Easton aided in the successful births of many children,
creating space for the most primal, nurturing connections between mothers and their
children to be made whole. As the co-creator and co-director of the noted Latin Funk
Festival in Miami, she worked silently behind the scenes to give Miami some of the
most important parties and concerts its music scene has ever experienced.

Finally, in her role as artist manager, she has worked tirelessly and often without credit to take local nightclub acts to festival stages across the world with audiences of over 30,000 people. The last few years of Easton’s life have found her own artistic spirit come into bloom, as she has started to share the photography of her years in these various roles. Her shots bear witness to intimate moments of pure, personal transcendence, and nowhere is this more evident than in this exhibit, Femi, in which she documents the grace, sensuality and power of women. The word femi translates to love, and in this case, it stands for the providential nature of femininity itself, beautifully captured in these photos by Easton’s keen eye.

Girls Got Kicks !

It has been little over a year in the making but it has finally come to fruition. The 'Girls Got Kicks' book is finally here. Thanks to the efforts of Female Sneaker Fiend (FSF) founder Lori Lobenstine along with some great photographers and collaborative documenting, the book release event is making its way to Miami from Boston!

We are so proud and excited to be a part of something so big. Being a FSF member will always be near and dear to our hearts and one of the reasons we got into this business.

We've meet some of the greatest people through FSF and we hope it continues to expand and broaden the minds of the sneaker culture.

"So, when did you fall in love with Hip-Hop?"

There's a question that most practitioners and admirers of Hip-Hop have been asked at one point or another. "So, when did you fall in love with Hip-Hop?" For me, Hip-Hop is recent love interest; a sweet, playful romance that blossomed towards the end of my scholastic endeavors in 2005.

Throughout my life, I've always had an intense attraction to words. As a (younger) kid, I was always nose deep in a book or someone else's business. I love the way words came together (or apart) to make me laugh and cry and get excited. I loved stories. Most music I heard came to me in the form of whatever I caught on the radio in the car or on the bootleg music video channel that broadcast on TV during that time (The Box!). There wasn't really a window for me to be exposed to anything other than the mainstream. The music of mainstream at that time being either sugary or sexual or angry and mostly vapid, I couldn't relate. I knew some of the words... and there were some names that I recognized when they flashed by but none of it held any weight for me. The music didn't even make me want to dance! Hence, my affinity remained true with English words and Latin rhythms. With the saucy merengues & salsas of Saturday afternoons and the beautiful boleros & bachatas Mami played on Sunday mornings. My heart all belonged to the words that made me daydream & the kinds of music intertwined in my blood line; the ones that never neglected to make me feel... something.

On the subject of the timeline of my symphonic epiphany, a distinct memory presents itself when I think of the very first time I even thought about Hip-Hop. I was in 7th grade, around '99 or '00, and I was sitting in the cafeteria during lunch with a bunch of kids who were in the process of assigning identities. One of the kids at the table took it upon himself to take turns asking everyone around, "Hey, are you a rapper or rocker?" It was a pretty loaded question at the time, since it seemed to determine where you landed in the sphere of social groupings. When my turn came to speak, I replied plainly: "Neither." My peers, all of which had chosen either side up until that point, seemed confused. They waited for me to explain my reasoning but even after I broke down my view, they didn't quite understand. I, in turn, didn't really get exactly what was so perplexing. I just didn't relate to the music. This seemed to be a concept lost on a group of inner city pre-teens who failed to comprehend exactly why anyone would have to "connect" to anything in order to enjoy it.

Little did I know that on August 26, 1998, a little more than a year prior to that conversation in the cafeteria and 2 days before my 11th birthday, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are: Black Star, the album that would one day change the entire spectrum of my musical universe, had been released.

Fast forward to tonight, 14 years after release, and I get to experience the entire album performed LIVE. Words can not express how excited I am. Do yourself a favor and come out and witness magic

One of the best things we get to do here at Randumb Miami is scope out really awesome ladies that are consistently doing the damn thing in every corner of our Earth. For our latest find, we didn't have go much further than our very own sunny, Floridian backyard! Below, get to know a little bit more about South Florida's own Mommy Warbuck$ and exactly why she keeps it Sugar Free.

Yo yo! I go by the name of Jahneen AKA 3rd World Princess AKA Mommy Warbuck$. I started cashing in the checks on the Left Coast be the Best Coast in Inglewood, California and now I'm based out of Miami, Florida. South Miami has a place in my heart. Always and forever.

Describe yourself in 4 words.

Passionate, Loyal, Opinionated, Independent.

Honestly, I could go on and on, but I chose those 4 words to describe me because I'm huge on standing for what you believe in. Never be ashamed to voice your opinion and back it up. I always say if you stand for what you believe in, everything else will follow.

Can you explain what Mommy Warbuck$ means and how your blog started?

The name MommyWarbucks was actually an AIM screen name that my partner and friend Kraaawse came up with, back in the ancient sidekick names. I don't think she really saw it as anything but that name always caught my attention. It referenced back to Daddy Warbucks in the Annie film, and I really felt like that name embodied who I was. I'm very big on gender and especially in the Entertainment Industry I feel that it is important for females to never doubt themselves. I can easily play the role of a man, with the grace of a woman.

The blog started out as a documentation of my life and still is. Working for Michael Katz, the leading Entertainment Attorney in South Florida, I was really given the opportunity to meet a lot of folks in the industry, and given the chance to attend music conferences and things of that nature. I really wanted to document myself stepping into that world and really sharing with folks and the encounters that I've made. It truly has been an adventure and I'm just getting started! I want to travel more, meet new people, and expand the site. I really want to share with others not only my life in this industry, but some of my personal favorites such as the music and culture from the West Indies.

Speaking of favorites, what are some of your favorite things? Favorite kind of music? Favorite artist?

Some of my favorite things. Hmm, I love to travel. The idea of getting on a plane and being somewhere totally unfamiliar, and foreign is amazing to me. I would love to go to India. I'm obsessed with their food (Curry & Naan rock my world), and I think the culture is absolutely gorgeous. The Entertainment Industry over there is also very intriguing. Ever watch a Bollywood film?

Another love of mine would definitely be playing in the Miami Carnival every year. I've never been given the chance to participate in Trinidad Carnival but this is more than enough. There's nothing greather than getting glammed up, dancing in the streets half naked and drunk for an entire day, with the sounds of sweet Soca as my soundtrack.

Speaking of Soca.. Soca, Dancehall, and Reggae are hands down my favorite kinds of music. Growing up I was never really exposed to Hip Hop. My mother used to play a lot of Gregory Issacs, and Marcia Griffiths so I guess that's where the love comes from. Listening to these kinds of music are very comforting and give me a home grown feeling.

Some of my favorite artists at the moment are people taking the left lane such as Frank Ocean and Steven A. Clark. They literally saved the genre of R&B. Their word play is simple and honest. That's what we were missing. I'm also a huge huge fan of Ricky Blaze and Major Lazer. The fact that they can fuse genres such as Dancehall and Dance/Trance music is simply amazing to me. Those dudes don't get enough credit.

Currently, what is your life and/or professional goal?

My goal is to take the culture of Reggae and Dancehall music and put a twist on it. Introduce it to new audiences and make it appeal to the masses. Dancehall in fact birthed the genre Hip Hop and I feel like it has always had a head start on the growth of Hip Hop. So I definitely want to introduce something new, not only to Miami, but hopefully many more cities in the future.

How does being based in South Florida affect what you do now and what you'd like to do in the future?

Being based in South Florida makes all the difference in the world. I'm in love with this city and I really see its potential. This is just the beginning for us and things are going to get crazier as the city grows. Everything I do, I do it for Miami. There is a culture here that goes unseen, there's a lot of art that goes unnoticed, and a lot of music that goes unheard. I want to be one of the faces to change that. I don't plan on relocating anytime soon.

You've currently put together an event that's pretty unique for South Florida. Why Sugar Free? What made you want to start up this event?

Sugar Free because shit ain't sweet around here! Lol, but seriously I wanted to throw an event that kind of showed who I was and what Mommy Warbucks stood for and Sugar Free does just that. Sugar Free puts females on the forefront, and like I said earlier I am a strong supporter of females in this industry. Sugar Free also gave me the chance to display fusions of genres such as Dubstep, Miami Bass, and others that are being meshed with Reggae. It's definitely something new and fresh, and something that Miami has never seen before. I'm very passionate about my culture and what I do and I wanted to share it with my city. I truly feel that a void has been filled in Miami by bringing you all Sugar Free. These kinds of shows are found all over Europe, and even right here in the U.S. Electric Punanny for example in NY, and other parties such as 1992. Miami definitely needs an outlet for people who also feel like this element is missing.

What can we expect from Mommy Warbucks and/or Sugar Free in the future?In the future you can expect some more exclusive content. I have a lot of artists on my radar that still might no be in the light of things but are definitely avant garde and I would love to be the one to showcase these kinds of talents. For Sugar Free, to say the least, expect the unexpected! I want to bring the NOW and the NEW with Sugar Free. It's a risky task but I believe that it is very important to introduce something new. Artists that have been in the game long enough and have conquered... well let's just say there isn't much of an awe factor or an element of surprise. We want raw talent. Nothing is sugar coated over here.

Jungle Romps w/ Swagmaster Unkle Luc

Chances are - if you're in to or involved in the Miami cultural scene at all - that somewhere, at some time you've come across his work. During a typical Miami day, with a typical Miami backdrop, I sat down to speak with this not so typical visual artist. Here's a little glimpse inside the mind of everyone's favorite Unkle.

Randumb Miami: Where did Unkle Luc come from? How did you get started?

Unkle Luc: I found, I forgot the brand, but I found a camcorder in my mom’s closet. My senior year, 2006.

RNDM: A VHS camcorder?

UL: Yea, mini tapes. I used to make little stupid little videos, shorts films. Take pictures on it and edit on Microsoft Windows Movie Maker. I became popular during my senior year because of it. Because people watched my videos. Before I knew about YouTube, I would just put [the movies] on a CD and just put them on all the computers in the school and people would find out about it.

RNDM: Did you ever get in trouble?

UL: Nah. The teachers loved the videos. I ended up making two senior videos with a slideshow of pictures and different clips that I recorded throughout the school year and from there it just took off.

RNDM: Would you say that you always liked doing videos or did you start off liking photography and it just went from there?

UL: I started off liking videos because that’s all I used to do. I ain’t have a life when I was younger so I would just be home watching TV. Later I picked up design because [my friend] Cruz was using Photoshop. When I was younger, I used to want to be like him. Everything Cruz did, I did. I dressed like Cruz. Cruz used Photoshop, I used Photoshop. He used to help me.

RNDM: Primarily, where do you see yourself drawing from for inspiration? Is it a, a random thought, something that you see, a particular artist that influences you… the majority of times.

UL: That’s kind of hard for me to answer. Musically, I can transfer inspiration that I hear in music… RadioHead, Coldplay, J Dilla. Him I just found recently. Like a couple years ago. Different bands, different music. It just depends on how I feel. If I’m feeling lazy, I’m not gonna do anything. Sometimes I get angry when I see something dope that I can’t do so I feel that urge to be able to accomplish the things that I find dope. Til I feel like I’m capable of doing that. Then I move on the next thing I want to do.

RNDM: What inspired you to start you 365 project initially?

UL: Flickr. That's something a lot of people were doing on Flickr and there was people that couldn't finish and i was like damn, this would be sick to do with some Photoshop. [The summer that] I left school to improve my Photoshop skills, I started doing my 365. It was a completely different idea and I did something wrong in photoshop and my head ended up on the wall and i was like that looks dope and that's how it began.

RNDM: Did you have a goal with the project?

UL: I used it to get better at design, to challenge myself. To force myself to do [something] everyday. I could experiment while doing it.

RNDM: What did you take away from doing the project?

UL: That i could do whatever I wanted. It taught me how there aren't many rules to making things. When I started, I felt like there was a guideline I was supposed to be following and as I kept going I started to realize that there wasn't. And that was exciting for me... to be able to do what I want. to have control.

When I started no one really knew what I was gonna do, no one was paying attention. Then everyday, more and more people started to catch on. By the end, I got like 10,000 hits on my blog which was dope for me because I guess I could say I wasn't really no one to look at it and it was cool that I was able to get there.

RNDM: Are you planning on doing a part two? If so, what differences can your audience, the people who are interested in seeing it, expect between 365 part 1 and 365 part 2?

UL: Yes. Before, I was just going along learning but people weren't around to see you learn. It's [already] a year that i finished it. A whole year that I've been learning, picking up new things, new story lines to incorporate, things to bring back. For the people that were there through the whole thing that were paying attention will be able to appreciate when they see the 365 project part two. There's gonna be an overall theme as always but there's probably gonna be different independent story lines along the way that I'll find a way to connect. That part, I'm still deciding on... so we'll see.

RNDM: What do you see as the benefits and/or pitfalls or downfalls that being primarily based in Miami have on your work or on you as an artist? On your exposure... on any/everything. How does being from Miami affect you, positively and/or negatively?

UL: The scene is really new. Everybody knows New York, everybody knows Los Angeles. [Those] are probably the two most respected places in the United States as far as the art scene goes. Everything dealing with art and expression, those are like the Meccas. Those are the places people run to when they graduate or they don't wanna go school they just go and start there. That's what I wanted to do. Then I realized that I wanted to be here when everything was starting off. I wanted to be recognized as possibly a pioneering figure in the event that Miami somehow became an epicenter of swag. It's already getting there. In 2010, I felt like a lot of dope musicians and people that were doing photography and people that were doing music videos started to rise outta Miami. I wanted to be a part of that but it's tough cause it's already established in New York and LA and people are already connected there. Being from here, I don't have access to the people that a lot of people want to see.

It's pretty fresh here. There's not too much competition. Being that this scene is so new, and there are so many people just starting, I don't have too many big fish to have to deal with down here. and all the big fish that are already established down here I've maintained a good relationship with. I do feel like if I went to any one of those places the only thing I would be missing to hit the ground running is the connections. I've had people in New York tell me that if I went up there I'd probably do a good job. I feel like if I went up there and I had the connections I could go up there and wreck shit. But I don't want to. I wanna be down here andI wanna see what happens.

RNDM: So you're definitely planning on staying and spreading your roots here.

UL: Yea.

RNDM: You've had a chance to work with a lot of local people and many different types of artists. What has been your favorite experience and your favorite project that you've worked on.

UL: My favorite experience has been Personal's 'Goodnight Goodbye'. I met him in august 2009. He told me about his album and what he wanted to do with it. He told me he wanted to do a movie for his album. That experience was fun because I never filmed that much stuff in such a short period of time. When we were done filming we had the deadline that we had set for ourselves. His album was supposed to come out. I had the pressure to edit the movie and he had the pressure to finish his album before the date he had set. I was editing the movie at my house. Then the next day, the second day of editing, FPL came and cut off my electricity so we had to pack up and go to his house which is like 45 minutes away so we stayed at his house there for another day. and we edited at his house for a couple days. It took like three days, between two different houses... back and forth back and forth. Trying to build anticipation for it. Then finally dropping it cause we were worried whether or not people were gonna watch it.

As soon as we dropped that, we averaged a thousand views a day for the first four days and we got reviews on dope websites. People that we thought wouldn't care were telling us how much they loved it. We were just happy that people were understanding. You know some people they felt certain ways about it. We had people tell us the movie didn't mean shit, that it was just random and it wasn't but it was fun because the majority of the people who told us how they felt about the movie they felt how we wanted them to feel and they came up with their own ideas. Some people came up with even doper interpretations for some of the stuff that was in the movie. That was fun because we didn't really want people to feel like they were wrong in whatever they perceived about the movie cause you know how it is with art and shit. It's really your own interpretation. That's the fun part about expressing things.

J.Nics is also awesome to work with because we understand each other. We're usually on the same wave length when it comes to doing a video. He'll come to me and he'll send me a song and he'll be like, "Yo let's shoot a video for this" and he'll tell me his idea and it will probably be the same thing I was thinking. Probably be some weird shit, something outside the box as far as not going too literal with what the lyrics might say. He's always down for it and it's not really a struggle. We could just bang out a video in one day.

RNDM: What's the worst part about being in the limelight and having your work put on such a public display and having people either criticize it or love it?

UL: I got used to that early because doing the Photoshop shit everybody who would give me tips were people were from the Internet. The people from the Internet are gonna be more harsh than people you see in person because they don't have to deal with any type of back lash. You can put something on the Internet and somebody can say oh this shit is wack and they can't get punched in the face. So every time I would Photoshop something, I would put it on forums and I would have people tell me that it sucked all the way to the point where people finally thought I was good.

When people I don't know criticize the stuff that I do or that I do with someone else, I don't really care. It usually hurts more when it's someone you know. But all of it, I use it as motivation to get better.

RNDM: What's the worst part about what you do in general?

UL: The worst?

RNDM: Your least favorite.

UL: Working with people that aren't that good. Or, when I have to deal with people that think I'm benefiting from doing things for them [for free].

RNDM: Let's talk about what else is in store for you. Who is your biggest wet dream of a visual partnership? Who do you wanna work with in the future?

UL: Wow. Well, I would probably wanna work with Yelawolf. I love Yelawolf's music. I wanna work with Kid Cudi. Now, if we go to the other side of the spectrum. I DEFINITELY wanna work with Andre 3000. He's one of the best MCs. I wanna work with Lupe Fiasco Kanye West. I wanna work with Radiohead. That's stuff that I wanna save for later. Stuff that i feel like, if i'm in my prime, you know, the sickest motherfucker out there, those are the people I wanna work with.

RNDM: Yea, that would be really...

UL: Swagged out.

RNDM: Well, that would be really awesome. Are there any women that you wanna work with?

UL: I would love to collaborate with Vashtie. There's other people... Why am i losing my thought right now?

RNDM: Cause we're girlies and we make you feel all oogly woogly inside.

UL: YEA.Well, there are, i just can't think about em right now. OH! M.I.A. too.

RNDM: So... big picture. What do you want to accomplish with all of this. What is your main goal?

UL: When I die, I want to be recognized as one of the most innovative people. Right now I'm at a stage where I'm trying to recreate things I was influenced by growing up. I'm learning things as I go. As soon as I feel like I can master every element that I could have learned from other people, things that people have already done and doing it in my own way, I wanna be able to say, or have other people say, that I did something that nobody every did. I certainly haven't done that yet but that's what I'm aiming toward right now. Being able to be named with people like Stanley Kubrick and all those motherfuckers. All those directors and photographers that people revere, I wanna be one of those people.

RNDM: So would you say that that's your goal: to be a director? Do you wanna have your own studio company, you wanna be the director, the photographer.... studio master?

UL: The Swagmaster

DOIN IT IN THE PARK

Basketball has been a huge part of my life. I'm always trying to find some way to incorporate basketball somewhere in my future long term plans. Community projects, tournament creation, coaching. SOMETHING.

If not, then I'll just be one of the few girls playing park ball forever.

Every now and then I would get text messages from my good friend who had been working with street ball legend and sneaker guru Bobbito Garcia about the projects they were working on and how they were going around playing ball at every court in New York. A project in particular is a documentary called "Doin It In The Park". Chronicling basketball players all around New York who treat and play the sport as if it were a religion and the park, their church. Sadness ensued as I felt I'd never be a part of something so big and inspiring.

Long story short, I am now involved in this wonderful project here in Miami in a small but personally significant way.

Open runs are being set up by Bobbito himself in New York and Miami runs will be organized by yours truly. We'll also be filming small clips of these open runs and posting them on the "Doin It In The Park" Facebook page!

The film is set to debut in 2012 so make sure to keep an eye out!

Beauty in Black & White

I've always been one to appreciate photography. For a moment, you're able to capture human emotion or characteristic with no judgment and no selfishness. You can stop time for just one second. That's pretty fucking cool man. Stop time!? Who knew we had such power at our fingertips.

Last night, Relz and I headed over to Wynwood to check out Bill Cunningham: New York at the O-Cinema. Relz had knowledge on who Mr. Cunningham is and compared to her, I was pretty uneducated.

For those of you who weren't knowin' as I was, Bill Cunningham is a noted fashion photographer who works for the New York Times among others. You have him to thank for introducing Azzedine Alaia and Jean-Paul Gaultier to the world. After dropping out of Harvard, becoming a Hat designer under the name "William J", being drafted into the army, returning to the states and writing for the Chicago Tribune and contributing significantly to fashion journalism, he began taking photographs of fashion on the streets of New York. From that stemmed his opportunity with the New York Times.

He is the definition of simplistic. Unbound by financial restraints, this man is 80 going on 60. If riding bike keeps you as young and vibrant as he is, I'm going to have to dust mine off. He lived in a 4 foot by 6 foot apartment in Carnegie Hall before being forced into a nicer apartment overlooking Central Park that to him were just "more rooms to clean". Simply put, the man is about his love for fashion, his camera, and his bike. That's all he cares about.

In a time where color film, and/or color development wasn't the easiest thing to obtain, Bill Cunningham was able to capture fashion photography in black and white and STILL convey the beauty in the clothes. The detail in the cloth. Fashion to me has always been about color and what goes with what, but not until yesterday did I realize that this man was able to do something almost super human. I'm not sure if it's his own passion that he conveys through his photography or if it's some sort of actual trigger in your mind that reacts to his work but seeing the fashion spreads in Details Magazine he took almost 28 years ago makes you appreciate not only the ability for a black and white photograph to reveal such beauty in fashion, but to appreciate the black and white attitude that even the photographer possesses. Bill Cunningham is a no nonsense kinda guy. He is genuinely happy doing what he does. He laughs on the daily, rides his bike, takes his pictures and sleeps in a room full of filing cabinets containing every picture he ever took. The same filing cabinets that surround him with what he loves most.

Don't be afraid to see past the color. When things are in black and white, it's a lot easier to see what's real.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any 28 year old photographs he's taken but if you get a chance, go check out this documentary or any of the documentaries currently playing at the O-Cinema. Click here for ticket info.

I'm the type of person that crumbles under restraint (claustrophobia, anyone?) and am a definite advocate for freedom of expression. However, lately, I've found myself plagued with a quiet but persistent struggle; a fierce battle between all I want to say and all I really can say.

We live in a world of over share, constantly absorbing other people's thoughts, ideas, plans... including those that probably shouldn't shared on a public forum, primarily, the internet. And you know what the deal is with the internet... once you share, it's there forever.

Celebrities deal with this issue on a larger scale from the moment they step foot in to the spotlight (please see, sex tape and nudie pic leaks). Unlike us normal people though, they have PR people... media personnel to handle their image, to do damage control when things go wrong. Nowadays, people thrust themselves in to the spot light through social networking and blogging sites, to exist forever in the public forum that is the world wide web.

WORLD WIDE.

That means everyone is (or has the potential to be) watching, reading, absorbing every little thing you decide to share. And once you share, it's there FOREVER. People can look you up on Facebook and Twitter and get an idea of who you are before they ever even meet you. There's lot of pressure to make sure you're conveying the correct image don't you think?

And then you have the people who have business contacts mixed amongst social media feeds. Now you're put in a position where you could potentially lose business over some dorky/offensive/weird/wacky post.

On the flip side, these are your actual thoughts after all... no one is feeding them to you. So why not share them with the world?? No use in filtering your personality out when the real you will come to light eventually anyway.

Tell me, do you find yourself filtering out some of the things you want to say or do you take a 'Fukitol' in the morning and let the diarrhea of the mouth flow?

It doesn't seem like it's been only a month since I moved out. Seems like I haven't stopped working. Can't believe it's been about a week since I painted my nails...

I'm 23. At this age, most people are already one their second or third living situation. I moved out of my mom's house for the first time only 30 days ago. The same house I've been in since I was two. The same house that my younger sister was born in to, that my parents divorced in, that I first explored love in. Possessions are just possessions, but memories... those are hard to leave behind. It was a necessary and possibly long overdue step in my life, one that has granted me a whole new set of emotions - as if I needed more -, a whole new bag of worries but has also opened up a brand new window of opportunity. An escape of certain restrictions that had been imposed upon me (lovingly, for the most part) since I was a toddler, through my teenage years and trickled over even in to my young adulthood. Undoubtedly, moving out for the first time is meant to be a maturing experience. A bittersweet transitioning process that was initially way more bitter than sweet but, surely shifting towards the opposite spectrum as time creeps along.

TIME.

What is that?! That's how I've been feeling lately. The month of March has been eternal. Between 65+ hour work weeks, spending time with my mom and handling misc. issues, I haven't had time to catch my breath (kind of literally... stupid asthmatic allergies). Adolescence is mostly consumed with procrastination and self exploration. Young adulthood is when the answers are due. My new found sense of freedom has been consumed by all my responsibilities... Responsibilities of which I have to tend to in order to maintain my freedom... Freedom which I can't enjoy because of all my responsibilities. My jobs have me cycling in routine (wake up, job 1 to job 2, eat, shower, sleep) and my routine has become mundane & impossible to break free from. What's a girl to do??

...And meanwhile, while I'm figuring all that out, here you sit lovely readers, clicking refresh, as Randumb Miami remains without an update sans event flyer here and there. More than just a much needed outlet of expression right now, this post serves as a glimpse in to the true life of one of the girls of RNDM. I'd love to entertain with pictures and stories of parties or well composed articles based off inspiring women and movements and shows and exhibits but, I've barely had a second to paint a finger on these tiny little hands of mine, let alone partake in the wonders of this Magic City, let alone tell you about it!

There's a lot of ambition in this world. Everywhere you look or read, somebody is hustling for something. Everyone has to work hard to do anything in this day and age and I'm really grateful to be fortunate enough to be in a position where I can handle my business. But there should always be some sort of light at the end of the tunnel. Some form of reward in sight.

Randumb readers, YOU are my reward.
This store, this brand... this is my motivation.

MOODSWING 360 Pool Party

Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a HUGE Nina Sky fan.

Since they first burst on the scene in 2004 with that song (you know which one I'm talkin about), I've been a Nina Sky devotee. Something about their style - even back then - captivated me. Their first album, particularly their song "Surely Missed", helped me get through one of the worst times of my life. For that, I'll be forever grateful.

Even though they've been keeping busy between stateside and international dj gigs, collaborations in music and fashion and the recording of their second album, for a lot of people, they're prompt the question "Remember those girls?". Label struggles have kept these multi-talented women from releasing their anxiously awaited projects. That changed last summer. To please their fans, constantly clamoring, wanting more of the twins, they dropped an EP back in August called "The Other Side" (which, if you haven't, you can download here). Needless to say, I had it on repeat for almost a month. Seriously, download it.

Sadly, I've never gotten to see Nina Sky perform live. Tomorrow, at the Clevelander, I'll be changing that. Join Chef and I as we enjoy an afternoon of beach breeze, palm trees and Beautiful People.

In efforts to improve the access to clean water in countries affected by disaster or countries in destitute conditions, as well as provide access to sport, NIKE has stepped up their philanthropy efforts with a concept fathered by Waves for Water to provide buckets that not only contain a soccer ball, that surely beats kicking around a sock filled with rocks, but the buckets themselves serve as a water filtration system that can provide clean water for up 5 years for 100 people at a time. Stopping the spread of Cholera and other water-borne diseases.

Following the devastating quake disaster in Haiti, water is of course in short supply. Being classified as having the worst water ranking out of 147 countries worldwide, according to the Water Poverty Index. Naturally, Haiti was a great place to pilot this program.

This weekend make sure to go check out what has been deemed an "awe-inspiring" and "Electrifying Stage Show".

RHAW brings street dancing in it's "Rhaw-est" form. Popping & Locking, B/Boy-B/Girl, Electric Bugaloo, it all comes together in an amazing way. Philadelphian choreographer Rennie Harris developed RHAW, founded in 07', preceding an overwhelming demand from young adults who wanted to be a part of his original company, Rennie Harris Puremovement (RHPM) founded in 92'. His initial motivation is education through the culture.

Home grown choreographer Rosie Herrera shares with her home town the ADF commissioned piece "Various Stages of Drowning: A Cabaret" as well as the new piece "Pity Party" at the Adrienne Arsht Center after a successful performance at the American Dance Festival. We got to experience it Friday night & it was amazing. A great visual experience that you HAVE to make sure you go see.

WHERE IS STREETWEAR HEADED?

When we initially started our company, there were a lot of things that motivated us.
Miami, Hip Hop and our own individualism were the building blocks and foundation of what we firmly stand on today. We knew there were lots of females who felt the way we did. A love for sneakers, but no streetwear stores that focused or catered to us and how great we look in streetwear and sneakers!

We came up with Randumb Miami. An online streetwear store that catered to womens streetwear. A comfortable, liberal, and inexpensive way to express ourselves through fashion. After a while we started to notice that female streetwear brands were headed in the opposite direction.

Nothing wrong with change right? Nothing at all.

But were they straying away from the roots that so firmly lifted them in the past?
Dare I say, selling out?

Supply and Demand is serious business. As business owners, we understand that.

We received a crazy amount of requests from our male followers to include some brands for them, so we decided to cater to our male counterparts. We appreciate our male following and are happy to cater to them as well.

So the question is, where is streetwear headed?

After spending days, weeks and months looking through hundreds of streetwear companies line sheets, We started to notice a trend. Expensive, cut and sew pieces sprinkled in all throughout these line sheets. After a while, only the tees were being sprinkled in and the cut and sew pieces became predominant.

We have nothing against cut and sew pieces.
Again, change is something we stand by and understand.
Making an outfit your own with different styles is what it's really all about.

But what happened to the effectiveness of the streetwear tee message?

Streetwear retail cut and sew pieces are starting at $50+. Where they do that at??!

Brands are so afraid of being categorized under streetwear. Its OK. I promise. There IS a market. It is filling up our inbox every day! And although we support the up and coming streetwear brands that are emerging pretty much everyday, there are things that I feel should be kept in mind when contemplating the direction of a brand.

To put it plainly. Shit's getting sloppy. Please remember that your name is on what you put out. You are representing yourself vicariously through your brand.

Are you?

A simple tee with the correct message speaks volumes. If you do it right, with clear purpose and thought, there is no way that your concept will fail.

Make sure to take streetwear in the right direction. Streetwear brands need streetwear stores. So if streetwear no longer exists, where will you go?

1st month of the new year is already bout done and it feels as though it was only yesterday we were toasting flute glasses and eating 12 grapes. 12 grapes, 12 wishes.

One of the wishes I made was to see Randumb Miami grow and evolve into what I hope I will be doing for the rest of my days. So here you have it.

The 28th of this month marks 3 months after Jonathan Corso's, better know as YNOT of the MSG crew, life was taken from him. Yes, he is still very much a part of MSG as he lives not only in those who admire his work but his MSG family as well.

There's no denying his presence. I see him everywhere on my ride to...everywhere. Some don't know what being a graffiti artist and what the art of graffiti is about. Relevance in an unknown future. To me, being a graff artists represents longevity in the minds of many. Even those who didn't know you personally. Many artists hope the colors that were used on a billboard piece stand out so much in your mind that you make time another day to go back and see it.

The crime that ended YNOT's life at the tender age of 21 is still "undergoing investigation". There are more details and many speculations but all we hope is that this investigation concludes quickly with the arrest and serious conviction of individual who robbed us of another creative soul and a wonderful person.

This will be the first one of many which includes Tough Love the brand (who's tees you can now find in our store!), Jean Grae, and our girl DJ Ill P.

This is an online radio station pncradio.fm. The ear peace airs every thursday from 10pm - 12am est. Ladies night will be the last Thursday of every month.

Ladies night is to promote female's doing their thing. For every episode they are going to feature a musical artist, a DJ and an artist whether its drawing, clothing, nails, photography etc etc.

Make sure to tune in cause we definitely will be!

Again, the show airs the last Thursday of every month, in this case the 28th, from 10PM to 12AM.

We got back from LA yesterday and the B-Boy Summit was great! LA has shown us love the times we've been out there and we're already planning a trip back to Cali.

We cannot wait to form some strong business bonds out there so that we can stop making up excuses to head back there!

We were in LA this past weekend and the question we got about a million times was,

"Are you going to Sneaker Pimps?".

The immediate "No, no we won't be here" answer followed with the inevitable frown.

As sad as we are, we're not too upset because we KNOW the Miami show is going to be ridiculous. Last years show was amazing with Clipse performing and we hope this years show is out to trump it with The Chef, Raekwon!

Although we would have loved it to be at last years venue which was amazing, it's going to be at Club Mekka, where DunkXchange is usually hosted in Downtown Miami.

VISUAL INTERCOURSE RECAP

We informed you about the Visual Intercourse show going down this past
Saturday at the Stash Gallery featuring our boys Patrick Aka. Do the lite
thing and ABSTRK.

If you didnt go you missed out on a great show.

With some hip hop in the background thanks to Mademe Turk, hot dog cart,
sangria, and even a bombed Scion Xb, it was a great turn out.

A new and very inventive way to express the miami culture, between the works of ABSTRK's graffiti art and
"P" literal light work, and then those 2 arts combined and fused, it's a sight to see.

There was about 11 to 12 works in total combined.

The set up was intertwined with both artists work, ABSTRK's graff pieces were exactly that.
Abstract pieces of the letters in his tag.

Letters A,B,S, T, R & K.

Also 3 "Wormizm" pieces in 3 different colors including a sculpture piece. The Graff can worm is a staple in
ABSTRK's work.

Also a collaboration piece between both artists that incorporated "P's" lite work with the graff art of ABSTRK.

"P" had about 5 pieces on his own. Framed mirrored images and letters lit up on each piece, one that was even sound activated to light up. There was an ode to love and an ode to the city we love.

After announcing that at the start of the free agency week, he would take a twitter hiatus, D. Wade comes back online to inform his fans one thing.

Seems as though Wade will continue to see sunshine and Chris Bosh will be joining him.

Lebron has yet to make a decision public but is scheduled to do so Thursday night at 9PM.

I've tuned into ESPN all this week and speculation, rumors, half truths, who should go where, salary caps, sign and trades, everything that can ever be discussed, has been calculated and they have yet to predict where they think this man could go.

Whatever happens, Wade stays home and we're happy. IF Lebron comes to Miami, I expect Season tickets to sky rocket. Band-wagoners to jump on in. And for me to never be able to afford a nose bleed seat.

We have always considered ourselves Miami-Wade County, but this week we decided to make it official. We here in Miami want to keep Dwyane Wade so much, that we have re-named our Miami-Dade County to Miami-Wade County. Well, only for his free agency week. July 1st through the 7th.

What better way of letting someone know we want them to stay than re-naming an entire county after them?!

Wade has confirmed time and time again that he actually wants to stay; under the condition that the Heat ante up their roster that is. The man needs help is what he's trying to say.

In what could be considered the craziest and incredibly talented free agent pool this year, today marks the start of a crazy week in the NBA and a very exciting week for NBA fans.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP

Just finished watching the Banksy film, "Exit through the Gift Shop" which was a huge hit at the Sundance Film Festival and is being shown in select theaters across the country.

Centered around one man's obsession to film everything around him, French-Californian filmmaker turned street artist Thierry Guetta. Aka. Mr. Brainwash (MBW). Obviously also centered around the love for street art and the individuals who have made a serious name in this field, Including Shepard Fairey, creator of OBEY, Space Invader, who is Guetta's cousin, and of course Banksy. The widely revered and anonymous face of street art.

I found the film to be pretty interesting. Coming in with no type of preconceived notion on what it might be about besides a documentary on street art.

My conclusion after watching the film? Mr. Brainwash's success, I feel, is more fueled by hype than actual talent. It was a right place right time situation.

I came home immediately to investigate further into the story and I learned that there is a wide array of speculation that the film and the creation of "Mr. Brainwash" may be a hoax. Put on by Banksy as a satire to art collectors and art "hype-beasts" everywhere.

It all kind of makes sense if it is.

They wont directly admit to it being a spoof but they wont deny it either. They kind of just, go around it.

Whether or not it's real, a joke, or maybe just maybe, MBW's work actually holds weight and validity in the street art community, you have to appreciate the exposure the world of Urban Art is getting from these types of documentary's.

ABSTRK, being a HUGE force in the art world, and Patrick, with his incredible work of illuminating apparel, you MUST have seen the Nike Vandals I wore to the Kanye West Glow in the Dark tour couple years back. That pair of sneakers turned more heads than you can imagine.

An Appetizer For The Mental Extremist, Cooked Up By Two Inner-City Anomalies.

MIAMI, Florida (July 10, 2010) ABSTRK and DoTheLiteThing (Patrick DeAbreu) invite you to take a journey into the unique minds of two emerging artists through a visually stimulating installation of lights, 3-D illusions, a vast array of colors, and interactive art. From the neon lights to the grit behind the scenes, Visual Intercourse,
presented by Stash Gallery, offers a surreal display of common objects and familiar places with Miami serving as the inspiration.

The concept for the show materialized after the two artists collaborated on an illuminated sound activated art piece, with ABSTRK laying the foundation through paint, and Patrick, implementing the lighting and technology. Both artists’ work can be seen in the upcoming season of the Oxygen Network’s reality television show, Bad Girls Club.

Initially inspired by illuminating apparel, DoTheLiteThing transitions into the art world with his premiere, offering a fresh urban perspective through a burgeoning medium. ABSTRK, exploring his “stylisms” and the characters he paints, transforms his graffiti
influenced art to canvas while continuing to express his style through murals. Selected by Gibson to customize an electric guitar auctioned off at the Hard Rock Casino, ABSTRK’s work has also been seen at art shows such as Primary Flight during Art Basel and through a vast array of street level installations throughout Wynwood and the Design District.

Set to the musical stylings of Madame Turk, Visual Intercourse guarantees an electric show catering to audiences seeking a raw and colorful experience.

GRAFFITI RECOGNIZED

To all those who were able to attend any Art Basel event in Miami, or that saw some of the coverage we had on the site, you must have noticed the huge presence graffiti and urban art has had on the event as of the past 2 years. It's not common for an event of that nature recognize an art form that has been misunderstood for so many years. We gotta be proud of the advances our culture has had.

Were happy to see that not only is Miami's Design District hosting graffiti in the growing cultural sector of the city, it's also embracing it and sharing it with the youth!

The Wolfgang Roth & Partners Fine Art's gallery will be hosting a Graffiti and Street Art Camp. They will feature guest artists and video presentations. They will not only teach these kids about the the urban art but will be introducing them or for those whole already know, reinforcing their knowledge in prominent artist and their influences. Artists such as Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, as well as other local artists.

The first camp session for children between ages 5 to 9 will be held July 12 – 16. The camp will be held at our large, bright Gallery in the heart of Miami's Design District from 9 am to 3 pm daily. A daily recess will be included so kids can burn off some steam!

The $300 fee includes all supplies and materials as well as two snacks and organic lunch daily provided by our talented Chef Richard!
